Note: Coordinating your information architecture, interaction design,
visual design, and usability objectives into a long-term
scalable deployment strategy presents numerous advantages.
See "Ongoing Operations" section.

Design is communication of concepts and ideas.
Good design simultaneously challenges and fulfills expectations.

Basic elements of visual communication:
  • form
  • content
  • arrangement
  • light
  • color
The purpose of graphic design is to make it easy as possible for readers/viewers/users to understand your message.

The driving emotions of visual communication:
  • seduction
  • conviction
  • inspiration
Food for thought:
  • Design for the first read.
  • Use a dominant visual or an element that provides a focal point (always consider bandwidth issues and graphic constraints).
  • Avoid static balance but be consistent (standardize obvious elements).

  • Unequal/unpredictable left/right or top/bottom balance helps provide movement.
  • Use white space around the work to add emphasis.
  • Tension can add interest to a page.

  • Success is measured by how quickly and effectively you communicate your ideas to the users.
  • Add emphasis to important elements.
  • Visual design is a tool for relaying the message, it is not the message.

  • The designer's work is to create experiences that inspire, compel, inspire, and communicate new approaches.
  • Design for clarity and impact.
  • Place yourself in the user's position, consider every aspect of the experience, online and offline.

  • Intention is part of good design.
  • Let content drive the development of the site.
  • How content is interpreted is dictated by how it is visually communicated.
