I have outlined a comprehensive approach towards full life-cycle
web presence management
in a corporate environment.

Even though this methodology can be applied in any environment, I suggest you visit the following site if you are new to web technology and need a more beginner's approach: Fortress Web Design Free Tutorial.

My approach is subdivided into the following sequential phases:

These phases can be either carried out sequentially
or be phased into each other on the fly.

Some people get hung up on what the right "web approach" should be.

Whatever works is the right approach. Methodology is a means to an end
and not vice-versa.

You must clearly define the business, architecture, interaction, usability, and marketing requirements of the project, make sure the finished product meets those requirements, and compromise where and when necessary.

In the e-business consulting world the following sequential
stage process is very common:

  • Strategy
  • Concept and planning
  • Design and prototype
  • Production
  • Testing phases

Sequential or Phased?

An e-business consultancy will usually go through the above stages sequentially. This will cost the client more but usually guarantees a higher degree of quality.

A normal company will usually try to begin all phases at once
while integrating them on the fly in order to save time. This method
is more difficult because it is harder to get closure and apply cut
off points within the various stages.

A typical web team:

  • Producer/project leader - coordinator, scheduling, budget, relationships, babysitter
  • Information designer - site structure, information organization (hierarchies), interaction design
  • Visual designer - brand and identity, sensorial design, concept visualization, interaction design
  • Creative director/lead - carries the vision of the site (meta not details), supports designer with clients or company management
  • Software Engineers - database architects, internal technical vision and support
